| The Newlyn
Gallery continues, as it was originally established to do, to
serve as a show place for the contemporary artists' "for
the public good". |
|
|
|
"The
people who support the arts locally and engage themselves in
the activities of the Gallery today, are naturally a talented
and public spirited lot. They enjoy a good wrangle- as of old-
and want a good show; they can argue for balance in exhibiting
our past achievements and contemporary artistic practise, quite
vociferously and intelligently. They give to the Newlyn Art
Gallery a great deal of time, acre and expertise without recompense,
and little honour!
|
|
| They are
not the close knit community of artists and their admirers of
a century ago, which affected the opening of the Gallery in
order to show their work, a show place for the artist. Neither
are the artists themselves a "school" who share one
way of working, "en plein air" or otherwise, or one
kind of art such as painting. |
The Council
of management of today is, nevertheless, aware of its public
responsibilities and the need for public "ownership"
of a wide range of visual arts. Therefore , Newlyn Art Gallery
today is more politically engaged with the second part of the
equation, for the public good. The dual concerns of Passmore
Edwards, for the artists and for public education in the arts,
still stand, as does the building. The changing faces are those
of community, society and environment."

of a Gallery, 1995). |

| In 2005,
it was announced that the Gallery had secured £2.7m required
to implement further improvements, including an extension to
the original Passmore Edwards building and improvements to the
entrance area and garden, together with the creation of new
gallery space, shop, café and education facilities on
the ground floor of the former telephone exchange in Penzance.
This work has now been completed and was officially opened on
7 July 2007. Photos of the new gallery extension are shown in
the "Photo
Gallery" |
