| Big
Lottery bid for new 'super' library and learning centre |
Devon
County Council has submitted a £1.45million bid
to the Big Lottery Fund 'Community Libraries' Programme,
a new fund earmarked specifically for developing libraries, for
a project which will transform Newton Abbot Library.
|
The
money will be used to develop the area at the rear of
the Passmore Edwards funded library using glass walls,
display and exhibition space and two new garden areas
that can be used for a wide range of community and learning
activities. At the same time the existing library and
ground-floor area will be re-configured to improve access
to services and activities for library users.
|
Executive
Member for Culture, Councillor Sheila Hobden, said: "This
project aims to reflect this community's demand and the
changing face of public libraries. We have a vision to
create an imaginatively designed and innovative multi-use
space in the heart of a modernised Newton Abbot Library.
It will provide a much-needed intimate, quality venue
in the town, which will link up to nearby satellite libraries
through the use of IT.
|
The
new building is aimed at encouraging new library users
to join, attracted by a wider range of craft activities,
children's clubs, storytelling, author events, heritage
events, music recitals, cookery demonstrations, learning
opportunities, discussion groups and other clubs and groups.
|
Opening
hours at Newton Abbot will be carefully tailored to enable
people to enjoy the facilities at weekends and evenings.
|
| The
outcome of the application will be known in September
