The
former library building is currently being restored as part
of a £10 Million expansion project at the adjacent Whitechapel
Art Gallery., doubling the size of the art gallery and preserving
the former library for public use. English Heritage have provided
a grant of £35,000 pay for repairs to the ornate red brick
and terracotta façade of the 1892 Grade II-listed building
The expanded Whitechapel, due to open in 2008, will include;

A Collections Gallery offering a chance to see important art collections
from around the world
o A Commissions Gallery with a brand new art work created specially
for the building every year
o An Archive Collection Gallery and Archive Research Room telling
the story of the history of the Gallery and the local area over the
last 100 years.
o An Education and Research Tower for local schools, community groups
and offering courses for all
o A new street facing café and full disabled access to the
whole building.

The
London Development Agency, the London Mayor's agency for business
and jobs has pledged £350,000 towards the new education and
training centre in the £10m development project.
Selected
from a distinguished shortlist of architects following an OJEC
competition, the Ghent-based practice, Robbrecht en Daem Architecten
lead the design team, working with artist advisor, Rachel Whiteread
