| Work on the library
commenced in February 1896, on the chosen site on the garden to Stuart
House. During the excavations for the library workers found a well
defined silver lead load, two feet in width and seven foot from the
surface running in a North and South direction. Some very fine stones
were taken from it before being sealed over. The building being directly
on to the pavemenet complaints were received about obstruction and
members of the council at one point raised concern about finding the
£200 required to complete the furnishing of the library. But
all this was forgotten when, on a dry and sunny October morning the
residents of Liskeard joined in the celebrations of the opening of
the Library by Passmore Edwards and its dedication to the memory of
Charles Buller MP (1805-1848) . |
